Italy Defeat Spain to Capture Third Straight Davis Cup Title in Bologna

BOLOGNA: Italy created history on Sunday by clinching their third consecutive Davis Cup title, defeating Spain 2-0 in a dominant final on home soil. The victory marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup triumph overall and solidifies their position as the current powerhouse in world tennis.

The last nation to win three straight Davis Cup titles was the United States, who achieved a remarkable five-title streak between 1968 and 1972.

Berrettini Gives Italy the Perfect Start

In the opening singles match, Matteo Berrettini delivered a clinical performance to hand Italy an early advantage. The World No. 56 produced 13 aces, did not face a single break point, and defeated Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4 in just 79 minutes.
The win extended Berrettini’s impressive Davis Cup streak to 11 consecutive victories, dating back to 2022.

Cobolli Completes the Job in Thrilling Comeback

With Italy one match away from sealing the title, Flavio Cobolli rose to the occasion in a dramatic three-set battle against Jaume Munar. After being outplayed 1-6 in the first set and losing his serve immediately in the second, the 23-year-old fought back with remarkable determination.

Cobolli broke back to 1-1, then claimed the second set in a tense 7-6(5) tie-break. In the deciding set, he secured a crucial break in the 11th game and eventually closed out the match 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, triggering euphoric celebrations from the Italian bench and the home crowd.

The young Italian capped off a memorable week in Bologna, having saved seven match points in his semi-final win over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.

Spain’s Return to the Final Falls Short

Spain were contesting their first Davis Cup Finals championship match since winning the title in 2019. The former champions showed strong form throughout the tournament, defeating Czechia and Germany to reach the final. But on the big day, Italy proved too strong.

With the victory, Italy further assert their dominance on the international stage, extending an era of national tennis success unmatched in modern Davis Cup history.
