RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s premier batter Babar Azam roared back to top form at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, ending his lengthy century drought with a brilliant unbeaten 102 to guide Pakistan to a commanding win over Sri Lanka in the second ODI.
Chasing 289, Pakistan dominated the run-chase from the outset, crossing the finish line at 291/2 with 10 balls remaining, thanks to a composed and clinical batting effort. Babar, who walked in at No. 3, anchored the innings with maturity, stitching a crucial century stand with Fakhar Zaman to keep Pakistan in full control throughout the middle overs.
The former Pakistan captain faced 119 deliveries, striking eight fours, and held firm until the end to hand his side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
This knock marked Babar’s 32nd international hundred and his first since August 2023, breaking an 84-inning drought across all formats — a milestone that brought visible relief and satisfaction to the star batter.
Speaking after the match, the 31-year-old said he never lost faith during the lean phase.
“I was waiting for it as well. I kept believing in myself and continued working hard throughout this period. I was getting starts but couldn’t finish the job for the team. Spending time at the crease helped rebuild my confidence.”
Babar also expressed pride over surpassing Saeed Anwar’s record, becoming the fastest Pakistani batter to reach 20 ODI centuries.
