Hanuma Vihari, a seasoned cricketer, announced his departure from Andhra Pradesh’s team, citing a loss of ‘self-respect’ following a recent Ranji Trophy defeat against Madhya Pradesh.
In a social media post, Vihari revealed the circumstances leading to his decision. He mentioned a dispute during his captaincy tenure, where he allegedly scolded a 17th player who complained to his influential father, prompting action against Vihari from the association. Despite his significant contributions to the team, including leading them to the knockouts multiple times and representing India in Tests, Vihari felt unfairly treated and eventually resigned from captaincy.
“Although we chased 410 against last year’s finalists Bengal, I was asked to resign from captaincy without any fault of mine. I never said anything on a personal note to the player but the association thought that the player was more important than the guy who gave his body on the line last year and batted left-handed, took Andhra to knockouts five times in the last seven years, and played for India in 16 Tests,” he wrote.
Expressing hurt and embarrassment over the Andhra Cricket Association’s handling of the situation, Vihari declared his decision never to play for Andhra again, emphasizing his respect for the game and his team.
While Vihari did not name the player involved, K.N. Prudhvi Raj claimed responsibility, denying Vihari’s accusations and suggesting Vihari was playing the sympathy card.
“I felt embarrassed but the only reason I continued playing this season is because I respect the game and my team (sic).” “The sad part is the association thinks that players have to listen to whatever they say and players are there because of them. I felt humiliated and embarrassed but I have never expressed it out until today. I have decided that I’ll never play for Andhra where I lost my self-respect.” He added.
The Andhra Cricket Association responded with a promise to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and ensure fair treatment for all players, regardless of seniority or status. They assured that appropriate action would follow after the investigation.
