Srinagar: The joint team of All Jammu Kashmir Mountaineering Foundation (AJKMF) & Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering And Winter Sports (JIM & WS) recently made a successful summit of Kashmir’s highest peak Mt Kolahoi.
“AJKMF and JIM&WS under leadership of Col Hem Chandra Singh, Principal JIM&WS successfully summited Mt Kolahoi at 1015hrs on 06 Sept 2023,” statement said.
The team included Principal , 03 Instructors from JIM&WS and 12 members from All Jammu Kashmir Mountaineering Foundation.
Col Hem Chandra Singh, Showkat Ahmad Mir ,Mohd iqbal khan and Ajay chauhan were from JIM&WS while as Danish Dhaar, Waseem Hassan, Amir Lateef, Faik Patoo, Bilal Bhat, Mouzam Ahsaan, Fayaz ahmad sheikh, Malik Mudasir , Faizan Shafi, Chandan Singh, Muzakir Khan and Nahida Manzoor were from AJKMF.
“On 3rd September 2023 , Team was flagged off by the Col Hem Chandra Singh from JIM & WS Nunwan Pahalgam for the expedition to conquer Kolahoi, the valleys highest and most arduous peak to climb,” statement said.
“The team left Aru at 10 am in the morning and reached Intermediate base camp at Satlanjan at 4pm and camped there for a night. On the next day, team moved towards Doodsar which is at an elevation of 3750m ASL and established base camp there. Technical equipment and ration was distributed among the team members before leaving for advance basecamp on the next day. On the morning of 5th september, the team moved towards Advanced Base camp i.e the main Kolahoi Glacier. Team roped up and started ascending the glacier; negotiating crevasses, icefalls and overhangs. The affects of global warming have also taken its toll on the main Kolahoi Glacier, making the route more treacherous and difficult. Team reached the advance basecamp (4700m ASL) at 1pm and immediately pitched tents as it started snowing,” Statement further said.
“On 6th September morning team left ABC and approached the eastern ridge route to Kolahoi, the same which was taken by the first successful expedition, led by Kennith Mason and Dr. Ernest Neve in 1912. Finally at 1015hrs on 06 September 2023 team successfully reached the snowcapped summit of Mt.Kolahoi. Its remarkable achievement were in 04 days 15 members summited this peak in one go,” statement said.
