Virat Kohli to Play for Delhi in Vijay Hazare Trophy After 15 Years

New Delhi: Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has confirmed his availability to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025 for Delhi, the domestic 50-over tournament, according to the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA).

“Yes, that’s right. He has given his availability,” confirmed DDCA president Rohan Jaitley to Cricbuzz on Tuesday, December 2.

While Kohli will participate, it is unlikely he will play in all matches for Delhi. The tournament is scheduled to run from December 24, 2025, to January 18, 2026, with Delhi placed in Group D alongside Gujarat, Services, Saurashtra, Odisha, Railways, Haryana, and Andhra. Delhi’s first game is against Andhra at Alur.

Kohli’s Domestic Comeback

This marks Kohli’s first appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy since 2009/10, when he last played in the tournament before preparing for India’s ODI series against South Africa. Over 14 previous VHT matches, Kohli amassed 819 runs at an average of 68.25, including four centuries and three fifties, maintaining a strike rate of 106.08.

Kohli’s decision reflects a shift in his approach to domestic cricket. Earlier, his post-match comments in Ranchi appeared at odds with the BCCI’s expectation for international players to participate in domestic tournaments:

“I’ve never been a big believer of a lot of preparation… All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel mentally I can play the game, I work physically very hard every day. It’s got nothing to do with cricket anymore. It’s the way I live,” Kohli had stated.

What This Means for Delhi

Kohli’s return provides a massive boost for Delhi in their bid for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Fans and analysts will closely watch how the former India captain balances domestic commitments with his international schedule.
