WASHINGTON, DC: In a notable moment at the FIFA World Cup 2026 final draw, US President Donald Trump was presented with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on Friday. The award was handed to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the high-profile event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The newly established prize, introduced by Infantino for the 2026 edition, recognises individuals who have undertaken “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace” and contributed to bringing people together globally.
President Trump had been widely considered the frontrunner for the honour. His close association with Infantino, highlighted by multiple joint public appearances in recent months, added significance to the presentation.
FIFA described the Peace Prize as a distinction meant for global figures who have made meaningful efforts toward unity and peace through their influence or initiatives.
Upon receiving the award, President Trump called it “one of the great honours” of his life and commended Infantino’s leadership in global football.
“Gianni has done an incredible job,” Trump said during his acceptance remarks. “It is a wonderful tribute to him and to the sport of football— or soccer, as we call it. The game continues to grow far beyond expectations. The world is a safer place now, and the USA is stronger than ever.”
The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will take place from June 11 to July 19, marking the largest edition in the tournament’s history.
